Genesis 1:9-10 (ESV)
9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
This is the last part of Creation we have before God begins to create life. God has put the stage in space and suspended it and supplied stage props. God, in his magnificent, glorious, providence, sets the stage for man, God’s most beautiful and wonderful creation, to express the perfect, unbridled glory of God in his Creation.
We see here the most sure obedience of all that is on the earth, even the dry land because God has indeed set the earth in its place. It is almost as though God were showing off his power. He calls forth dry land, and it appears. He gathers the waters together and sets their limits. He records it so that we may look and marvel at his glory. Have you ever been to the beach? Have you seen the spot where the water reaches its highest point? It goes no further. God determines that point. He tells the waters to halt, and they halt and recede.
After this point, God begins the really cool stuff. He does what Frankenstein only ever dreamt of doing. God creates perfect life. Life that comes from him. The giver of life who is himself life. Let us glory in our Creator! Soli Deo Gloria!
