While at work the other day, I sang along with the terrible songs that play on the radio and was sarcastically told that I should join American Idol. We proceeded to have a conversation about whether it was still on air.
This led me to ponder the idea of idols. What is an idol? An idol is anything that we worship instead of God. So what do we worship instead of God? Everything we can.
We worship phones, computers, social media, television, race, “freedom”, the country, our position and popularity, politics and pretty much everything else.
My biggest idol growing up was football. The onset of the latest season brings to the fore this dark stain on my heart. I did not play. I wanted to but I decided I was better at watching than playing. I became obsessed with statistics and predictions. By the grace of God I have been released from this but it still makes me wonder, “What other things may be idols in my life?” What about you?
Every one of us is, even from his mother’s womb, a master craftsman of idols.
If what our elder brother has here said is true, what is your idol?
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:15
Turn away from your idols, beloved. Please do.
