My brother and I were playing frisbee today as a storm was rolling in. The distant rumble of thunder and our inability to throw with any accuracy whatever let us know how close it was. Then came a thunder clap that shook the sky. It was absolutely magnificent. And terrifying.
Never in my life have I felt so small as I did in that moment. The majesty of God in his Creation was nearly too much for my small heart to take. I was taken, in my mind, immediately to Revelation 4:
4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads.
5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God,
6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: – Revelation 4:4-6
I was reminded today of the beauty of God. And not only the beauty but also the terror. The rumblings and the peals of thunder brought to mind the holy nature of Christ while the rain that ensued reminded me of his grace. It is indeed a wonderful and powerful God we worship. What a privilege to be indwelt by his Spirit! Soli Deo Gloria!
